Accurate
and highly reproducible results are achieved using the Coulter™ SA 3100™ Series Analyzer.
The instrument measures specific surface area from 0.01 to >2000 m2
g-1, and pore size distributions from 2 to 200 nm (20 to 2000 Å)
diameter. Between 0.1 and 5 g of
sample is required, depending on the resultant surface area. Samples are placed in specialized glass tubes, cleaned by
outgassing for up to 4 hours, and analysed in a coolant bath of liquid nitrogen.
The instrument is particularly suited to the characterization of the
surface properties of soils and sediments, including an assessment of surface
texture
