Equestrian lunge rings, arenas and gallops are not infrequently prone to drainage problems. Unless care is taken in the design, construction and selection of materials used in this regard the size grading of sands used to form the surface can be of great importance. The durability of the sand, and its propensity to break down to silt over time is also for great importance. We recommend that sands are tested at the time of delivery in order to minimise the risk of future problems. Analysis of the surface materials from arenas which are experiencing drainage problems can also help to determine whether the quality of the sand used is a significant contributory factor. Good quality equestrian sand should be free-draining, compact well, non-staining and non-crusting.
