Concrete is a high strength and often very durable material. However, under some circumstances it experiences severe and sometimes sudden deterioration due to chemical reactions. These may include alkali-silica reaction, sulphate attack or acid leaching. A range of tests is normally applied to determine the nature and causes of deterioration, including physical testing, microscopic examination, and mineralogical and chemical analysis.
